Chia Review - Does it Help To Consume
Chia for Weight Loss?
Not all weight loss supplements are created equally. While some
actually help your body perform natural functions that are necessary
to losing weight, many simply mimic these functions so it seems as
if they can help you lose weight. Some of these supplements may
have no negative side effects, while others can cause dangerous
interactions if you take medications to help treat other medical conditions.
One diet supplement making the rounds lately is chia seeds. Many proponents expound on the weight loss benefits associated with eating these seeds, however we wanted to know if the science backs this up.
Keep reading to find out.
What Is It?
Chia seeds come from a flowering plant known as salvia hispanica L. Although seeds are the most popular method of ingesting this substance, it is also available in capsule or oil form. These tiny little grey-black seeds resemble burnt sunflower seeds or tiny rocks.
They can often be found in the bulk bins at health food stores around the world.

How Do They Work For Weight Loss
Many chia proponents can give you a laundry list of reasons that this substance can help you shed excess weight. One of the main reasons often given is that this product can curb food cravings by blocking some of the food you eat from getting absorbed into your system. If your body absorbs less food, then you reduce your energy intake and lose weight.
Chia is often touted for its supposed satiety benefits, making you feel fuller much longer than you normally would. Those who endorse this substance say that these seeds are capable of absorbing as much as ten times their weight in water, so a thick gel is formed, preventing some of your food from getting absorbed as fat.
Another argument often made in favor of using these tiny little seeds for weight loss is that it can regulate your blood sugar, preventing you from craving high sugar foods that are full of fat and calories. Additionally, this is also the apparent source of its energy properties, allowing you more energy to participate in regular fat burning workouts.
Side Effects
Using chia for weight loss is safe as long as you don’t use it for more than 12 weeks. Unfortunately there isn’t enough known about the potential side effects of consuming this product for more than 12 weeks.
There are however some populations that should not use it under any circumstances, including pregnant and breast feeding women. Not enough literature exists examining the effect chia use may have on developing babies.
If you have high levels of triglycerides then you should also stay away from most types of chia as many of them will only increase these levels. Speak with your doctor before starting a regimen of this product to make sure it’s safe.
How Much Do I Take?
There is not enough known about the effectiveness of chia for weight loss or any other health issues to know exactly the right dosage for weight loss. Any supplier that gives you an exact dosage is misleading you.

One study conducted in 2009 and published in the journal Nutrition Research provided the test group with 25 grams of chia seeds and they found that it had absolutely no effect on body mass at the end of the test period.
Does It Work For Weight Loss?
As far as the science is concerned this is not an effective supplement for weight loss. A 2009 evaluation on the science of taking it for weight loss and other ailments found that chia was “possibly effective” for a variety of medical problems such as angina, cancer, allergies and hypertension.
This same study however, also found that with only 2 studies conducted on the effect it has on weight loss, neither produced positive results. Based on an examination of all the studies using this substance to prove weight loss, there have been no significant weight loss differences between the test and placebo groups.
One way in chia could be effective for weight loss is its fiber content. One ounce of seeds has 11 grams of fiber, which will make you feel satisfied longer to help you reduce your overall energy intake. Fiber is also great for digestive efficiency, which can also help you in your quest to lose weight.
With just 137 calories per 1 ounce serving, seeds could present themselves as an ideal healthy snack that provides you with essential nutrients. The nutrition facts make this a smart snack choice because it is low in fat, high in fiber and provides you with a healthy dose of protein, which is essential for weight loss.
Unfortunately chia is not the magic pill it is purported to be for weight loss, but that does not mean that it can’t help you achieve your goals as part of a well balanced approach to weight loss. You need to find healthy snacks that provide you with essentials like fiber and protein—chia is that snack—but it must be combined with well rounded meals and regular fat burning exercises. When working with a healthy weight loss plan, this product can help you reach your fat loss goals.
